Rewilding Romania

Good for nature and people

Rewilding Romania is an environmental foundation, part of Rewilding Europe along 9 other landscapes across the continent. Our mission is to protect nature, to restore degraded habitats, and to create livelihood opportunities based on nature-friendly activities.

Who we are

Rewilding Romania was founded in 2017 with the mission to demonstrate the benefits of rewilding for both nature and people.

Starting 2022, Rewilding Romania became part of the European Rewilding Network, a network composed of organisations from all over Europe that has the objective of rehabilitating damaged ecosystems and restoring natural processes.

What are we doing here

We collaborate with the government, national parks, municipalities, and local communities to protect the natural heritage of our country, rehabilitate damaged ecosystems, and create new opportunities for people to earn a better living, close to nature.

Our actions

Coordinating the Bison Reintroduction Programme in the Southern Carpathians, in the Țarcu Mountains. A new LIFE Grant (2024-2029) will help boost rewilding efforts in the next 5 years, aiming to increase the viability of the bison population, develop the first Bison-smart Community, and create a National Action Plan for Bison management.

Reintroducing key species that are missing from the ecosystem, but were part of the fauna in the past, and have essential roles left unfulfilled: bison, vultures, beaver, ibex.

Increasing the herbivore population to restore natural processes and increase biodiversity.

Sustainable land management to support nature recovery.

Restoring aquatic ecosystems and free flow of rivers by removing barriers.

Identifying ecological corridors and implementing sustainable management protocols for these key areas.

Eco-touristic development of the area in order to attract international tourists, promote responsibility towards nature, and provide alternatives that are not putting pressure on nature.

Supporting local communities to develop nature-friendly businesses.

Educational events and activities that aim to raise awareness about protected areas, biodiversity, umbrella species, natural processes, responsible consumption and nature-mindful development.
