Rewilding Europe

A European initiative

28th of June, 2011, marks the beginning of a beautiful initiative that aims to create a real impact across the entire Europe through rewilding, a new approach towards conservation. With this goal in mind, Rewilding Europe was formed, an organisation that leads the way to rewilding, by reintroducing keystone species in different landscapes across 12 European countries.

The vision imagined by the founders: Frans Schepers, Staffan Widstrand, Neil Birnie and Wouter Helmer is centred around the natural processes and more space for the wildlife. When we allow nature to take care of itself, ecosystems regenerate, wildlife returns, the biosphere thrives and the people reap benefits.

The Rewilding mission is to demonstrate the benefits of rewilding and act as a catalyst for other organisations to get involved in rewilding actions. Today, rewilding actions led by Rewilding Europe are taking place in 10 Landscapes across Europe, including the Southern Carpathians, where keystone species are being reintroduced and the communities are being revitalised through nature-based tourism.
