To support the educational component of the LIFE with Bison project and to encourage a better understanding of nature among younger generations, Rewilding Romania organized an excursion in October 2025. The event involved 12 children from Armeniș, Rusca, Teregova, Slatina-Timiș, Sadova Nouă, and Timișoara. This activity was offered as a prize to the winners of a competition held during the “Jocul Popular – Tradiție Perenă pe Valea Timișului” Folk Festival in Armeniș. The competition included children from both communities within the bison reintroduction area and other localities. Through this initiative, we aimed to give participants a chance to learn more about the European bison, biodiversity, and rewilding initiatives in the region.
The excursion took place near the village of Feneș. Participants hiked along a themed trail to explore nature and understand the European bison’s role in the Țarcu Mountains ecosystem. Rangers and members of the Rewilding Romania team guided the children throughout the activity. The team explained the biology and ecology of the species, its function in maintaining natural habitats, and the measures Rewilding Romania applies to encourage coexistence between people and wildlife.
Participants learned how to identify wildlife tracks and signs. This included animal trails, resting areas, and other field indicators. The program also featured educational games and discussions about biodiversity, nature conservation, and the relationship between local communities and the region’s natural heritage.
Through activities like this, Rewilding Romania aims to give children opportunities for direct learning in nature. The goal is to enhance their knowledge of biodiversity, natural processes, and wildlife species. These experiences also help build a better-informed younger generation. They learn the value of local natural heritage, the importance of environmental protection, and the need for coexistence between people and wildlife.
