Junior Rewilders Camps

Junior Rewilders Camps

As part of the LIFE with Bison project, Rewilding Romania conducts the Junior Rewilders educational camp annually, a program for children from communities surrounding the European bison reintroduction area in the Èšarcu Mountains. This initiative aims to deepen understanding of biodiversity, ecosystem dynamics, and the vital role of wild species. We also seek to foster awareness among youths about the European bison, its ecological significance, and the importance of peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife.

In 2024 and 2025, the camp united children from Armeniș, Cornereva, Teregova, Feneș, and Domașnea, offering hands-on learning in nature. The program featured guided hikes, wildlife observation and interpretation, workshops on tracking animal signs, wildlife monitoring sessions, and practical demonstrations of conservation technology, along with discussions with specialists and Rewilding Romania partners active in biodiversity conservation.

An important part of the camp was familiarizing participants with European bison in the Țarcu Mountains. Through hands-on activities and interactive sessions, children explored the species’ ecology, its role in its habitat, and the need for human-wildlife coexistence. Field excursions, wildlife tracking, and conversations with Rewilding Romania experts and rangers deepened understanding of how wild species shape ecosystems.

Alongside the nature-focused component, the program also included activities illuminating the links among natural heritage, local communities, and sustainable development. Participants met local entrepreneurs, explored initiatives that leverage local resources, and engaged in educational activities that fostered curiosity, observation, and hands-on learning.

Through the Junior Rewilders camp, Rewilding Romania aims to provide young people with opportunities to learn in nature and to help develop a generation that understands the value of biodiversity, the role of natural processes, and the importance of coexistence with wild species.
