Bison Ambassadors

The story of the European bison’s return to the Țarcu Mountains does not end with the work carried out in the field. It gains meaning when it is carried further, from person to person – by specialists, local communities, and public figures.

The role of a Bison Ambassador is to actively promote coexistence between people and nature. Together with the Rewilding Romania team, the ambassadors contribute to raising awareness about the importance of the bison’s return to the Țarcu Mountains.

As part of this initiative, three public figures have joined us – people who share these values and actively support this direction.

Dana Rogoz

Roxana Zaha

Alexandru Stermin

Dana Rogoz – close to nature, close to people

Dana Rogoz is a Bison Ambassador and works alongside us to help bring the story of the European bison in the Țarcu Mountains closer to people. Through what she shares, she hopes to encourage a better understanding of the bison’s role in nature and to help people gradually reconnect with the wild.

Her professional journey reflects the same consistency and openness to meaningful stories that resonate with people. Dana Rogoz is a Romanian actress and public figure who began her career as a child, appearing in numerous productions for children and television series. In 2008, she graduated from the National University of Theatre and Film “I.L. Caragiale”. This was followed by many roles in theatre and film. In 2019, she premiered in the main competition of the Sarajevo Film Festival with the film MO, directed by Radu Dragomir, in which she played the leading role – a performance that earned her several nominations and awards for Best Actress, as well as international recognition. In 2023, she made her directorial and screenwriting debut with the short film REMOTE.

For Dana, being a Bison Ambassador reflects the way she sees the relationship between people and nature, and in her direct and sincere way, she describes what this experience means to her:

For me, being a Bison Ambassador means, first and foremost, being a messenger for this extraordinary initiative. I want to carry forward the achievements and stories of Rewilding Romania to my community and to other nature lovers. We already know that knowledge brings us closer, and from closeness, care and love can grow. I strongly believe in the power of communities to protect what they truly come to know and love. And if what I share can help raise awareness, bring people closer to nature, and, ultimately, support its conservation, then I feel I am truly fulfilling this role. I am very much looking forward to visiting the Țarcu Mountains, witnessing the extraordinary spectacle of nature, and meeting the communities who help protect this ecosystem.”

Through her contribution, Dana Rogoz carries forward not only the story of the bison but also an open invitation for all of us to look more closely at nature and rediscover our place within it.

Roxana Zaha – regenerative agriculture as a way of working with nature

Roxana Zaha has a background in anthropology, is a farmer practicing regenerative agriculture, and is currently an Ambassador for the Life with Bison project, working alongside us to bring people closer to the story of the European bison’s return to the Țarcu Mountains.

Over the past few years, Roxana has built a regenerative vegetable farm guided by the principle of working in harmony with nature. Her practices focus on soil health, biodiversity, and natural balance: she attracts pollinators and beneficial animals, uses companion planting, and introduces bumblebees into the growing process year after year. As a result, the farm has become a biodiverse space – a true sanctuary among fields treated with chemical substances.

Roxana believes that global warming and ecosystem degradation can be addressed through an agricultural approach that places nature at its center – one that yields far more than food alone. This is also the message behind her ongoing awareness work, which she consistently shares online alongside her farm work.

I am honored to be a Bison Ambassador because being a guardian of the values of the natural world – values that are at the foundation of a meaningful and abundant life on Earth – is the mission of my life. It is a philosophy I have embraced and one that, through the Life with Bison project, I can now share with even greater confidence. To me, it means showing reverence for the natural world not only in words, but through real actions that connect animals, plants, and people in lasting and thriving ways.”

For Roxana, being an Ambassador is a natural extension of the way she lives and works, and through this role, she hopes to help bring people closer to nature and encourage a deeper understanding of its role in our lives.

Alexandru Stermin – a life dedicated to nature and understanding it

Alexandru Stermin is a biologist, explorer, and university lecturer, and his work often takes place in the heart of nature, in direct contact with wild ecosystems from around the world. The relationship between humans and the natural world lies at the center of his work, which he explores through expeditions, research, and direct field experience, contributing to a better understanding of wildlife and the importance of its conservation.

He is currently a Bison Ambassador and works alongside the Rewilding Romania team to bring the story of the European bison’s return to the Țarcu Mountains closer to people – an initiative that naturally continues his long-standing interest in the relationship between humans and nature. As he says himself: “When you look into the eyes of a bison, you are reminded that you cannot protect Nature, you can only choose not to betray it.”

He teaches at the Faculty of Biology and Geology of Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca and has participated in expeditions to the South American rainforest and Siberia. He is the author of the books A Journey Around Humans, Fallen from the Jungle, and The Orangutan’s Gaze, all Humanitas bestsellers, and regularly writes for Dilema and National Geographic.

Through his research and exploration, Alexandru Stermin contributes to a deeper understanding of the natural world and of the relationship between people and the ecosystems they are part of, encouraging a relationship with nature based on respect, responsibility, and coexistence.
